Mobile Marketing Podcast: WVU Alumni Association

The author of Relevance Raises Response, Bob Bentz, was recently interviewed by the WVU Alumni Association as part of its Spotlight Series. The interview is part of a podcast series that highlights alumni achievements of the West Virginia Alumni Association and the university. A different alumni is featured each month in the Spotlight Series.

During the interview with WVU Alumni Association President Sean Frisbee, Bentz discusses the origins and history of the 28-year-old company Advanced Telecom Services and its spin-off Purplegator which was established in 2014. He also talks about his initial venture into the ringtone business which led to how the company got its start into mobile marketing. That involvement started with the creation of mobile technology and evolved into both technology and providing marketing services. The discussion then moves to the evolution of mobile marketing itself and how mobile is ideal for small business marketing with its geo-location and other pinpoint targeting features that only mobile can provide. Then, there’s an interesting conversation about his work as an adjunct at the University of Denver and the graduate-level course in mobile marketing that he teaches at DU. It was the teaching that inspired Bob to write the book.

Bob Bentz is a 1981 graduate of West Virginia University where he majored in journalism. He is a long-time fan of the school who follows its sports teams and is a football season ticket holder. You can find him tailgating at all home games near C3 in the Blue Lot. He is also a lifetime member of the WVU Alumni Association.

The interview concludes with Bentz creating a soundbite that will surely be used again by the Alumni Association:

“The decision to come to WVU was one of the best that I’ve ever made.”

Adjunct Writes College Mobile Marketing Textbook

9 Chapter Book Designed Specifically for College Mobile Marketing Courses

“The mobile phone is our lifeline. It is our gateway to the world. It is our digital DNA”

So begins the first chapter of Relevance Raises Response: How to Engage and Acquire with Mobile Marketing, by Bob Bentz, president of mobile-first digital agency Purplegator.

Denver – Marketing is an ongoing contest for people’s attention, and mobile provides the mechanism that, in the history of promotion, is the closest a brand has ever been able to get to its customer.

In Relevance Raises Response: How to Engage and Acquire with Mobile Marketing, mobile marketing industry veteran and University of Denver adjunct Bob Bentz takes an extremely broad subject called “mobile” and makes it understandable for undergraduate and graduate students. He delivers it in snack sized portions over nine chapters designed to coincide with college courses in mobile marketing. The book covers the most important aspects of mobile marketing today:

  1. Introduction to Mobile
  2. Advantages of Mobile
  3. Mobile-Optimized Websites
  4. Text Message Marketing
  5. Social Media
  6. Mobile Advertising
  7. Mobile Apps
  8. Mobile Commerce
  9. The Future of Mobile

“When I began teaching, I became frustrated with the fact that the books on this burgeoning market are so soon outdated,” said Bentz. “So, I began writing additional material so the students weren’t reading things that were no longer accurate. That gave me a wealth of content that ultimately led to the creation of this book. It was written with the students in mind. I plan on updating it every year so that it remains the most current mobile marketing textbook in the industry.”

What you’ll get with this book is proven mobile marketing strategies from an author that lives it every day in his job.  It is his passion. It is his livelihood.
